The EPW.1 Hussar (German: Husar) was the Wingardian light tank born of the Expeditionary Tank program, conceived to provide fire and heavy reconnaissance support to the Federal Army's expeditionary regiments of the late 1960s and early 1970s. A rugged, reliable, easy to maintain platform, the Hussar's service survived the wind-down of the controversial expeditionary interventions and found a niche in traditional airborne units until its retirement in 1987.

As of 2025, the Hussar is the only vehicle to have used the Expeditionspanzerwagen (EPW) New Standard designation.

Variants

  • EPW.1 (1968): Initial production model of the expeditionary tank design, envisioned to make use of the older, WW2-era surplus K7 75mm main gun and its corresponding ammunition reserves.
  • EPW.1M2 (1970): Improved variant centered around a modern, purpose-built 90mm main gun compatible with the KP.1 Hammer's ammunition, made redundant with the main battle tank's calibre transition to 105mm.
